Dissolving Wigner’s Old Puzzle – with Necessitarianism

Eugene Wigner’s famous puzzle about the “unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics” is really three puzzles braided together: why abstract mathematics applies to the physical world at all, why it appears indispensable to our deepest physical theories, and why mathematical structures developed for purely internal reasons — with no physical application in view — keep turning out to be exactly what new physics needs. Six decades of philosophical responses (Platonism, nominalism, structural realism, deflationary naturalism, Tegmark’s mathematical universe hypothesis) have each addressed part of the problem while leaving the rest untouched. The reason is that they all share a background assumption they never examine: that the fundamental laws of nature are contingent.

That assumption is doing all the work. If the laws could have been otherwise, the correspondence between mathematical structure and physical law is a coincidence across distinct modal domains — the necessary and the contingent — and no principled explanation is available. The explanatory vacuum is real enough to have been recruited as an argument for theism. But withdraw the contingentist assumption and the puzzle substantially deflates. If the laws are necessary, both mathematics and physics inhabit the same modal domain, and the convergence between them — especially the serendipitous convergence of internally motivated mathematics with fundamental physics — becomes intelligible rather than miraculous: mathematicians and physicists, guided by different methods, are exploring the same landscape of structurally deep necessary truth.

The argument also runs in reverse. If necessitarianism provides the most unified, parsimonious, and explanatorily powerful account of mathematical effectiveness — handling applicability, indispensability, and serendipity in a single stroke — then the observed effectiveness of mathematics is itself defeasible evidence for the necessity of laws. Wigner’s puzzle is not merely a problem that necessitarianism alleviates; properly understood, it is a datum that necessitarianism fits better than any competing view.
